Oil on canvas painting is a portrait of Jesse Root Grant, father of Ulysses S. Grant. The bust portrait shows a man with a white beard, glasses, black suit and tie, and a white shirt. He holds a presentation cane with a gold ferrule (a ring or cap). On the back of the portrait, "Long Bransh [sic] 1873, H. Balling" is written. The portrait was painted by Norwegian-born artist Ole Peter Hansen Balling.
